In Uttar Pradesh, ruling Bahujan Samaj Party MLA Shekhar Tiwari and his nine associates were today sentenced to life imprisonment by a session’s court at Lucknow for murdering Public Works Department engineer Manoj Kumar Gupta in Auriyya district in 2008.Special Additional District Judge Virendra Kumar also sentenced the MLA's wife, Vibha Tiwari, to two-and-a-half year’s imprisonment on charges of destroying evidences.The court has imposed a fine of 68,000 rupees each on all the 10 convicts besides slapping a fine of 4500 rupees on Vibha Tiwari. AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that Gupta was beaten to death in December 2008 by Shekhar Tiwari and his associates, at his residence in Auraiya, after he refused to pay donations for the Chief Minister's birthday celebrations. An FIR in this regard was registered by the slain engineer's wife Shashi Gutpa at Dibiyapur police station in Auraiya.
