Hillary Clinton meets Mamta, FDI on agenda

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today urged India to take more steps to cut its purchases of oil from Iran to keep pressure on it. Ms. Clinton and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Benerjee meeting is in progress to discuss Indo-Bangla Teesta Water Treaty and the issue of FDI in multi-brand retail and other economic reforms are likely to figure prominently during their talks.

Pressing India to further reduce oil imports from Iran, tops the agenda of Clinton who arrived in Kolkata on Sunday for a three-day visit to India.

Speaking at a public event in Kolkata, Clinton commended the steps taken by India so far in lowering purchases of Iranian oil and hopes to do more. She said there was adequate oil supplies available from countries like Saudi Arabia.

The US has been urging India and other countries to slash oil imports from Iran aimed at stepping up pressure on Tehran to comply with international demands over its nuclear programme.
