The Hijri New Year is being observed in UAE today. The occasion marks 1,439 years since the migration of Prophet Mohammad and his companions from Makkah to Madinah, Islam's holiest cities in Saudi Arabia. The first year in the Islamic calendar, Hijri 1, corresponds to the year 622AD.<br/><br/>Muharram is also the first month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammad.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that the occasion of Hijri New Year does not usually involve public celebrations or traditional events and is considered to be a day dedicated to faith, in which Muslims honour the beginning of Islam and reflect on the passage of time.<br/><br/>
