The high level segment of the U.N. General Assembly opens later today, with more than 100 world leaders gathered to discuss a wide range of issues including situation in Libya, the Palestinian statehood application, terrorism, impact of economic slow down, reforms in the UN Security Council and non-communicable diseases. The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and some other heads of the states and government’s are expected to arrive tomorrow.US President Barak Obama is in New York City to deliver his address. On the side lines he will discuss the situation in Libya, Afghanistan and the Middle East with the leaders. Barak Obama will have a meeting with the chairman of Libya’s new governing group, the Transitional National Council,TNC, Mustafa Abdel Jalil.TNC was recently seated as a representative of the Libya government at the U.N. US President will also hold a bilateral meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai to discuss the withdrawal of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. He will also meet President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil and hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey. AIR correspondent covering the event reports from New York that this is only the second time when general assembly has focused on the world's biggest killer, non-communicable diseases. Issues concerning women were also taken up in a separate meeting in the last two days.
