A high level Indian delegation comprising of National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar will be visiting Sri Lanka on Friday to discuss a range of bilateral issues between the two countries. Among other things, progress in the reconciliation process in war affected northern Sri Lanka, and the UN Expert Panel report on accountability during the war may be taken up for discussion. Only last month after the visit of the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister GL Peires to India, a joint statement had underlined the importance of ‘a devolution package, building upon the 13th Amendment, would contribute towards creating the necessary conditions for such reconciliation” New Delhi had urged the expeditious implementation of measures by the Government of Sri Lanka, to ensure resettlement and genuine reconciliation, including early return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their respective homes, early withdrawal of emergency regulations, investigations into allegations of human rights violations, restoration of normalcy in affected areas and redress of humanitarian concerns of affected families. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Media Minister and Spokesperson Keheliya Rambukwella today at a media briefing said that it deals only with the Central Government of India and does not take interests in the activities of single Indian States. Mr Rambukwella made these statements at a media briefing in response to a question on the Tamil Nadu Assembly Resolution to pass economic actions against Sri Lanka and to declare the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa as a war criminal. He also said that these anti Sri Lankan statements and the 13th Amendment will be taken up with the Indian delegation during their visit to the island nation.
