A high level Indian delegation comprising of National Security Advisor Shiv shankar Menon, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar will be visiting Sri Lanka later this week to discuss a range of bilateral issues between the two countries. Among other things, progress in the reconciliation process in war affected northern Sri Lanka, and the UN Expert Panel report on accountability during the war may be taken up for discussion. Only last month after the visit of the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister GL Peires to India, a joint statement had underlined the importance of ‘a devolution package, building upon the 13th Amendment, would contribute towards creating the necessary conditions for such reconciliation” New Delhi had urged the expeditious implementation of measures by the Government of Sri Lanka, to ensure resettlement and genuine reconciliation, including early return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their respective homes, early withdrawal of emergency regulations, investigations into allegations of human rights violations, restoration of normalcy in affected areas and redress of humanitarian concerns of affected families.
