Petroleum minister Jaipal Reddy today held a high level emergency meeting to discuss the oil adulteration issue. Petroleum ministry called this emergency meeting to chart out a course of action to root out the oil mafia. The move from the centre came after in a gruesome incident Nashik additional district collector Yashwant Sonawane was burnt alive by the oil mafia in Manmad in Maharashtra. The officer went to conduct a raid on the local oil mafia for pilferage from kerosene tankers. Our correspondent reports the Rangarajan Committee report had suggested introducing IT systems to monitor the movement of trucks carrying the kerosene and monitoring the fuel tanks.Meanwhile, two days after Additional District Collector of Malegaon, Yashwant Sonawane, was burnt alive by the oil mafia in Manmad, the Maharashtra government has carried out simultaneous raids on oil adultrators across the state. AIR Correspondents from various parts of Maharashtra report that the raids were conducted in parts of Nashik, Jalna and Malegaon. AIR Correspondent from Sindhudurg reports that the local police have taken action against 30 persons as a preventive measure. Sunil Kolhe, Superintendent of Police, Sindhudurg, said that out of 30, one person is involved in oil adulteration while the others belong to the sand mafia. This crackdown from the government comes after Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said that the ambit of the probe in the officer's murder be expanded to include the entire oil mafia nexus.
