In Andhra Pradesh, a high alert was sounded in all the coastal districts as the low pressure in the Andaman Sea began gaining strength. The state is in for another spell of heavy rains accompanied by strong gales as the low pressure area is converting into a cyclonic storm and is likely to hit the coast in another two or three days. According to the Cyclone Warning Centre in Visakhapatnam , the cyclonic storm is likely to move towards the north coastal Andhra Pradesh before making a landfall. The storm might even take the shape of a super cyclone due to the long distance it will travel. Chief Minister K. Rosaiah reviewed the situation twice yesterday and the Army, Air Force and the Navy besides the Disaster Management Response Force have been kept on standby. Meanwhile, five days of incessant rains played havoc in the Coastal districts of the state under the influence of Northeast monsoons and the low pressure in Bay of Bengal . A total 26 persons were killed while standing crop in 6 lakhs 70 thousand acres was destroyed in Godavari and Krishna deltas. Over 5 lakh 50 Thousand people were affected mainly in Nellore , Krishna, East and West Godavari districts. Chief Minister will be under taking an aerial survey of East Godavari and Krishna districts this morning. He instructed Ministers at a Cabinet meeting held last evening to rush immediately to the affected districts to monitor relief measures. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has requested the prime minister to release funds from the Calamity relief Fund and instruct the Central team now touring the State to assess the damage caused by rains in last September to extend its mandate to the latest disaster.
