In Andhra Pradesh, a red alert was sounded in the old city of Hyderabad following firing at Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader and legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi this morning in Hyderabad. Owaisi was seriously injured in the incident and admitted in the nearby Owaisi Hospital. The incident took place when Owaisi was taking part in a public programme in his constituency. Another MLA, Ahmed Balala was also injured in the incident. According to police, four assailants opened fire at Owaisi and attacked him with a dagger. When the gunmen of Balala retaliated, one person died and two more injured, the police said. Land dispute was said to be the reason for the attack on Akbaruddin. Following the incident, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting with Home Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy, Director General of Police K Aravinda Rao and Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan. He has directed the police officials to take all precautionary measures to maintain law and order in the city. State Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy said all steps have been taken to ensure peace in old city following the incident. Stating that special parties have been formed to hunt the culprits, she said the Government would act stringently against those who indulge in such violence. Stating that one person died and two others injured when Balala’s gunmen retaliated firing, she said investigation is underway. Meanwhile, all political parties, including Congress, TDP, TRS, CPI, CPM and BJP have condemned the attack on Akbaruddin. In separate releases, the top leaders across party lines have expressed shock and condemned the incident.
