High alert as depression moves towards six coastal districts in Orissa

The Orissa government has issued a high alert to six coastal districts over a depression in the Bay of Bengal which is likely to intensify further and make landfall on Friday. The alert was issued in the districts of Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore, while others were also asked to keep a vigil.An official at the special relief commissioner's office said in Bhubaneswar that the depression, which lay centred at about 430 km south-east of Gopalpur on Thursday, was likely to intensify into a deep depression and move in a north, north-westward direction. Local met office director S Sahu said, the system is likely to make landfall between Goplpur and Paradip on Friday.Rain and thundershower would occur at most places over coastal Orissa and a few places in the interior areas. Fishermen were asked not to venture into the sea as the condition was likely to be rough to very rough. Under the impact of the depression, winds with speeds reaching 45 to 55 kilometers per hour would occur along the coast.Most parts of the state experienced heavy rains during yesterday dampening the Durga puja festivities.
