Help us grow, appeals LDC to world

The Least Developed Countries (LDCs) have called upon the international community to take a comprehensive approach for their socio-economic advancement. In a joint declaration brought out following the conclusion of the two day summit in New Delhi today, they urged the international community to effectively address the challenges faced by the LDCs to ensure global peace, security and prosperity. Expressing concern that international efforts so far have lacked resulting in the increasing number of LDCs from 25 in 1971 to 48 in 2011, the declaration called for an ambitious programme of Action to get at least 50 per cent of LDCs to come out of this list by 2020, when they meet in Istanbul in May. Expressing satisfaction over the increasing South-South Cooperation and South-South trade and investment flows, the LDCs committed to further strengthen mutual partnership as a complement and not as a substitute to North South Cooperation.Acknowledging the need to reinvigorate the United Nations development system in supporting and promoting South-South Cooperation, they urged the United Nations for mainstream support for South-South and triangular cooperation.Expressing deep concern at the precarious state of global food security, the declaration said that the food price volatality, inflation bring destabilizing impact on the LDCs. They called for bringing about an agricultural revolution in LDCs to achieve self -sufficiency in food. Noting that the share of LDCs in global trade is just around one percent, they appealed to the development partner countries to address the bottlenecks in the programme including stringent rules of origin, complex procedures and supply side constraints to enable LDCs to have a greater share in global trade. They also called for an early conclusion of DOHA round with a development based outcome to allow meaningful integration of the LDCs in the multilateral trading network.
