In Jharkhand, with no single party or alliance in a position to muster majorty in the 81 member assembly, hectic political activity is on. Congress and its ally Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatrantrik) with 25 seats will require support of 16 MLAs to stake its claim for forming the government, while the BJP, JDU alliance with 20 seats will require support of 21 MLAs.

With 18 Assembly seats in his kitty, JMM chief Shibu Soren today said the results indicated his popularity and wanted his party to be allowed to form the government in Jharkhand. JMM's organisational secretary Suprio Bhattacharya indicated that nothing less than the chief minister's post for Soren would satisfy the rank and file.

Meanwhile Union minister Subodh Kant Sahay today said the Congress-JVM(P) combination should be allowed to form the next government in order to provide stability. Saying that JMM president Shibu Soren is expected to be with the secular combination, Mr Sahay said Soren had been given the chance twice earlier and this time the Congress combination should be allowed to form the new government.

The Congress had supported Soren government after a fractured verdict in 2005, but it had lasted only nine days. Congress again gave outside support to Soren from August 27, 2008 to January 12, 2009 when Soren had to step down following his defeat in a byepoll.

BJP says it has not yet taken a final decision on the present political situation in Jharkhand and given this assignment to the senior party leader Mr. Raj Nath Singh . Replying a quesiton in the press conference , the party President Mr. Nitin Gadkari said that the issue was discussed in detail in the Parliamentary Board meeting yesterday and a decision will be taken after taking into account all pros and cons .

‘
