Hectic parleys on among political parties for seat adjustment in Assam

In Assam, hectic parleys are on among different political parties for seat adjustment for the two-phased Assembly polls scheduled to be held on 4th and 11th of the next month. The notification for the first phase of polling in 62 Assembly constituencies will be issued on 10th of this month.Top leaders of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) are holding parleys with the aspirants of some selected Assembly constituencies to evolve a consensus in a bid to avoid nomination-related bitterness within the party. The party is also preparing to make announcements on electoral alliances and seat adjustment issues with the other regional parties like the Bodoland People’s Progressive Front (BPPF), the United Democratic People’s Front, Gana Shakti and the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC). The CPI (M) will have electoral understanding with other Left parties like CPI and CPI (ML).The ruling Congress, the BJP and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) have announced to fight the ensuing election without any alliance with other parties.Meanwhile, the Chief Election Commissioner S.Y.Quraishi along-with two Election Commissioners is arriving at Guwahati on a two-day visit to Assam tomorrow (7th & 8th March) to review the poll preparedness. According to official sources, the full Commission will hold discussions with the State and district Election authorities to monitor the implementation of election guidelines. They will also review the steps taken for strict adherence to the model code of conduct and complaint monitoring system besides security and other arrangements for a free and fair polling in the State.
