Hectic campaigning on in WB, TN, Kerala and Puducherry

The Deputy Election Commissioner, Mr. Vinod Zutshi has arrived in North Bengal to review Assembly election preparedness. During his three-day visit to West Bengal, Mr. Zutshi will separately meet the six North Bengal district administrations which are going for the first phase of poll on the 18th of this month. In Tamil Nadu, Leaders of the political parties are on last leg of their campaign trail, strongly pitching for their alliance to be voted to power. In a battle of high stakes, the DMK led alliance and the Aiadmk have carried out a relentless no holds barred campaign to capture power. Meanwhile, Election department officials are distributing voter-slips at all polling stations today. The Director General of Police Mr.Bhola Nath said, all 54,340 polling booths in the state would be protected by paramilitary forces and state police. AIR correspondent reports, the Election commission's pro active measures to stop the use of money power, has been the talking point both in public domain and in electioneering. Defending the commission, the Madras high court said that the powers conferred on the Election Commission and its officials did not appear to be arbitrary or against the constitutional guarantees to citizens. A Division bench headed by Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal said, seizure of unaccounted cash, other movables, huge quantity of gold, silver and unlicensed arms by the EC does not violate any fundamental right. With just a day for campaigning to come to a close, campaigning is reaching a crescendo. In Kerala, just one day left for active campaigning for the assembly poll on Wednesday, campaigning by all major political parties reached a feverish pitch. Addressing congress led UDF election rally in Thiruvananthapuram, AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said that a fast growing India is also ensuring that the fruits of development reaches the less privileged and deprived sections. He said congress party acknowledges corruption as a major issue and corrective steps have been taken whenever corrupt practices have been detected. Highlighting the importance of MGNREGA in ensuring employment to the poor, Rahul Gandhi said that the centre is ensuring several social security measures for the poor. In Puducherry, campaigning for the April 13 Assembly elections has reached its peak. The leaders of different political parties are making their last ditched efforts to woo the voters.
