Heavy rains lash Tamil Nadu; death toll climbs to 150

In Tamil Nadu, heavy rains continue to lash most parts of the state even as the death toll in rain related incidents have gone to 150. Cuddalore accounted for the maximum of 28 deaths, followed by Villupuram were 21 persons lost their lives. The met office in Chennai has forecast more rains for coastal and interior districts in the next 24 hours. A bulletin issued by the weather office says that the trough of low pressure over Bay of Bengal has developed into a well marked area and would bring heavy rains to several districts. Meanwhile, Revenue minister I. Periaswamy has said that over one lakh 50 thousand hectares of standing crop in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur and cuddalore have been submerged in rain water. Thiruvarur District collector Chandrasekaran told newsmen that over 50,000 persons have been housed in relief camps. Water released from overflowing dams, river, lakes and tanks in the southern districts have led to people living along the banks to move to safer places. Meanwhile, the state government has appointed 8 top officials to assess the damages in the affected districts. The officials will be visiting the rain hit areas in the next two days and will submit a report to the government. The state cabinet which will study the report on Tuesday will then decide on relief works to be undertaken.
