AIR correspondent reports that parts of the Middle East have been swamped by unusual flash floods after unseasonal torrential rain swept from Egypt to Jordan. Reports say at least seven people have died in flash floods and heavy rains in Egypt. It was the worst flooding in Egypt since January 1994. The west coast of the Sinai Peninsula saw the heaviest flooding, forcing rescuers to use rubber rafts to search for injured people and those trapped in their homes. Flooding blocked main roads in the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, parts of the country experienced electricity cuts. while heavy rains brought down the ceiling of buildings in some parts of the airport, five Egyptian ports were also closed due to the unpredictable weather. Egypt’s neighbour Israel temporarily closed its border crossings with Egypt and Jordan due to the heavy rains.Flooding has forced more than 100 people to flee their homes in Gaza after heavy rains hit the area. Security services worked through the night to evacuate families from the area of Wadi Gaza, south of Gaza city. At least 12 people were injured in the flooding which destroyed scores of homes and inundated animal pens. Hamas, in control of the Gaza Strip, said the flooding is a humanitarian disaster and declared a state of emergency in the area. The flooding cut off roads and washed away a bridge linking Gaza city to the south of the territory. Flood waters reached three metres in some places. Yesterday seven people were killed in the region when heavy rains caused the worst flash floods seen in a decade.
