Heavy rain kills at least 10 in AP

In Andhra Pradesh, at least 10 persons died due to heavy rain that is lashing several parts of the state for the past few days. State Disaster Management authorities told All India Radio that four persons died in Prakasam district while two in Srikakaulam and one each in East and West Godavari, Nellore and Ananthapur districts due to rain-related incidents.

Though Cyclone Nilam weakened into low pressure, incessant rains continued to batter several parts of Coastal and Telangana regions under its influence. Met officials today said that heavy rains are likely to continue in Telangana and Coastal districts for next 12 hours. Meanwhile, several streams and rivulets in the state are in spate especially in west Godavari and Guntur . People from low laying areas in Eluru town of West Godavari district are being evacuated and shifted to a relief camp .

Thammileru stream has flooded some residential colonies. In Guntur district also evacuation is in progress. With flood water submerging high ways and rail tracks , the road and rail traffic has been affected at several places. Preliminary estimates say, one lakh 80 thousand hectares of standing crops have been affected while horticulture crops in 4000 hectares were damaged.
