Heavy rain continues to lash TN's south coastal and delta districts

Heavy rain continues to lash the south coastal and delta districts of Tamil Nadu. The trough of low pressure extending from Kumari Sea to South west Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu coast is likely to bring heavy rain in the districts in the next 24 hours.<br/>Meanwhile, Chennai, and Cuddalore and Tirunelveli districts have got some respite as there has been no fresh rain. However, schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram have been closed till the 13th of this month. <br/>AIR correspondent reports, Cuddalore is still devastated by heavy rain as many parts of the district were inundated by rain water. People are returning from relief camps to their homes as water is slowly draining out. Many residential areas like Jyothi Nagar and Ragavenda Nagar were badly affected by rain water. Nagapattinam was badly affected by heavy rain, Many acres of paddy crops were damaged as rain water submerged paddy fields. Heavy rain in Vedaranyam has hit normal life in the region. In Tirunelveli people heaved a sigh of relief as rains subsided. However excess water released from Papanasam and Sevalaru dams into Thamaraparani river has created havoc in Thidiyur residential areas. Many road links to villages were disrupted as rain water has submerged road bridges. In Thoothukudi as Thamaraparani is in spate water has entered many homes. People are being kept in makeshift relief camps. Power connection has been restored in 95 per cent of the area according to state electricity minister Natham Viswanathan.
