In Assam, heavy polling was reported in the second and final phase of Assembly polls today. Chief Electoral Officer of the State Hemanta Narzary told AIR Guwahati Correspondent that an estimated 65 per cent electorates exercised their franchise in today’s polling. He said, the poll percentage is likely to go up as reports from remote areas are yet to come in. In the second phase, 64 constituencies spread over 14 districts in lower Assam and the Bodo belt went to the polls. In the first phase of polling on the 4th of this month voting took place in 62 constituencies. The polling today passed off peacefully at 3.00 this afternoon barring a few stray incidents in some voting centres at Rangiya, Morigaon and Jaleswar. Police had to open fire there to control groups indulged in violence. Political fortunes of 496 candidates, including nine sitting Ministers, two former Chief Ministers- Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Dr. Bhumidhar Barman, besides the President of the main opposition Asom Gana Parishad, Chandra Mohan Patowary are now sealed in the Electronic Voting Machines. The counting of votes will be taken up on May 13.The ruling Congress has put up candidates in all the 64 constituencies. BJP and Asom Gana Parishad are contested in 58 and 53 seats respectively. AIUDF and Bodoland Peoples Front have also fielded their candidates in 59 and 26 seats respectively. There are altogether 110 Independents in the fray.
