Heated arguments in K’taka assembly over adjournment motion on attacks on Churches

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly witnessed heated exchanges today when the Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah sought Speaker’s permission to move adjournment motion on a series of attacks on Church that took place in 2008. In the preliminary submission, Siddaramaiah argued that the attacks in the State and Justice Somashekar report on the issue has disturbed the Christian community. Hence he urged the Speaker to allow the adjournment motion. At this point Parliamentary Affairs minister Suresh Kumar intervened to say that the Somashekar Commission report is still not presented to the Cabinet. The Government has time till six months to table it in the Assembly. Since this is the case, Suresh Kumar, argued that the issue cannot be brought under Adjournment Motion. The members of the House from Congress and JD(S) persisted with their demand to allow the motion. When the members were engaged in heated exchanges, the Speaker K G Boppaiah gave a ruling against the motion. He stated that since the incident is not of recent occurring and as the report is still not tabled in the Assembly, the Adjournment motion under rule 60 cannot be allowed. Protesting against the Government for failing to protect the interest of the minorities, both Congress and JD(S) staged a walk out. Thereafter Home Minister Ashoka assured the House that minorities are treated at par with other communities in the state. He also gave assurance to the Christian leaders who were protesting against the Church attack that after examining the Somashekar report which is running to 1800 pages, appropriate action will be taken by the Government.
