Heat wave claims 4 lives in Haryana and UP

The heat wave sweeping north India continued unabated claiming 4 lives in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. While three persons died due to sun stroke in Haryana's Ambala district, one succumbed to the scorching heat in UP's Muzaffarnagar yesterday.

In Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad recorded a maximum of 47.7 degree Celsius. People in parts of eastern UP, however, heaved a sigh of relief due to light showers in the region.

AIR correspondent reports that the road traffic and power supply has been affected due to high velocity wind in Gorakhpur and Basti divisions.

Blistering heat wave continued to sweep northern states of Punjab and Haryana. While Amritsar recorded 45.5 degree Celsius, the maximum temperature in Patiala and Ludhiana touched 45 degree Celsius. Our correspondent reports that Chandigarh braved a hot day with maximum settling at 44 degree Celsius.

Delhi continued to remain in the grip of the heat wave with the maximum temperature settling at 44.2 degree Celsius, even though some parts of the national capital received light rain.

Rajasthan also continued to reel under intense heat wave conditions with Sriganganagar being the hottest place at 47 degree Celsius.

Himachal Pradesh's lower hills also sizzled while mid-hill regions received light showers. Una in lower hills was hottest with a high of 44 degree Celsius, six degree above normal, while state capital Shimla recorded maximum at 30.1 degree Celsius, six degree above normal.

Several places in Jharkhand experienced temperatures three to five degrees above normal with the mercury soaring to 46.5 degree Celsius in Garhwa.
