HC serves two notices to MP govt in connection with relief to farmers

The Madhya Pradesh high court has served two notices to state government in connection with the relief to farmers following crop loss. Hearing a PIL regarding compensation to frost hit farmers of the state, the Jabalpur bench of high court served a notice on the state government. This PIL sought directive to the state government to furnish a blue print about how financial assistance would be distributed to farmers for crop loss due to frost. On the other hand the Indore bench of high court also served a notice on the state government regarding compensation to farmers on another PIL. Meanwhile, the state Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has requested Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to sanction a special package of 1505 crore rupees for the frost affected farmers of the state. In his letter Mr. Chouhan said that an interim survey of the state government reported loss to crops worth over 3686 crore rupees in more than 33 lakh hectre area. The state congress president Suresh Pachori has also written letters to prime minister and the union agriculture minister drawing their attention to crop damage due to frost and consequent incidents of suicides by farmers in some parts of the state. The state government has accepted earlier this week that about two dozen farmers committed suicide or tried to commit suicide t in the state in the last two months.
