HC seeks clarification from Centre on political advertisements

The Delhi High Court today sought clarification from the Centre on a petition which alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had splurged public money on ads that are politically motivated. The Court asked the Union government about steps taken to follow the Supreme Court's directive on political advertisements. In his petition, Congress leader Ajay Maken has alleged that the Delhi government's ads allegedly violate the May 13 Supreme Court order.

The HC asked whether any committee had been set up to keep a watch on various advertisements that violate the Supreme Court's guidelines. The Court will now hear the matter on 27th of this month. On May 13th the Supreme Court had ruled that government ads can feature pictures of only the President, Prime Minister and Chief Justice of India. The ruling meant that Chief Ministers and Governors cannot feature in government ads.
