The Bombay High Court has asked the Maharashtra government to pay 20 lakh 37 thousand rupees as compensation to 163 families displaced by the Tarapur Atomic Power Project holding the state responsible for providing alternate accommodation to them. A bench headed by Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice R V More gave the decision on Thursday hearing a bunch of petitions filed by villagers. The petitions stated that the Government and Nuclear Power Corporation of India , who built the project, had not fulfilled their commitments of giving rent to the people. The petition claimed that the project affected families were not paid rent from June 2006 to March 2007. In October, 2004, the High Court had framed a rehabilitation scheme for project-affected-persons. According to the scheme, the families were to be paid rent compensation by NPCIL, which was to be disbursed through the District Rehabilitation Office, until they were given possession.
