The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to consider creation of a statutory body to adjudicate disputes with regard to payment of cane prices to farmers and their cooperative societies within a specific period. Passing the order on two writ petitions filed by the sugarmills of Ghaziabad, the Lucknow Bench of the Court yesterday observed that the government must take appropriate steps to ensure monitoring of sugar mills regarding payment of cane prices in accordance with rules within a reasonable period. The bench said the farmers are lifeline of a country and in the event of any injustice meted out to them, the country will suffer from ill-consequences like the reduction in agriculture products.
