Hazarika’s cremation deferred till tomorrow morning

In Assam, the funeral of the deceased music maestro, Dada Saheb Phalke awardee, Padma Bhusan Dr. Bhupen Hazarika has been deferred till tomorrow morning.This was stated in a press release issued by the State Government. The step has been taken as people in large numbers are pouring in spontaneously to pay tribute to the legendary singer, composer.Dr. Hazarika’s body has been kept for public viewing in Judges Field. The funeral procession is now re-scheduled at 6.00 a.m. tomorrow instead of this afternoon.The State Government has declared holiday in its offices in Kamrup metro and Kamrup rural districts till 12 noon tomorrow in view of the funeral of Dr. Hazarika.Educational institutions in these two districts will remain close tomorrow.The State Government has made all arrangements to perform Dr. Hazarika’s last rites with full State Honours at the re-selected location at Guwahati University campus at Jhalukbari in the city.Meanwhile, Dr. Hazarika’s son Tez Bhupen Hazarika has arrived in Guwahati this morning from New York to light the funeral pyre.His wife Priyambada Patel, however, could not come due to ill health.Dr. Hazarika, 86, breathed his last in Mumbai on Saturday following multi-organ failure.
