Hasina receives UN award for Bangladesh’s MDG achievement

Bangladesh has been presented with an UN award for its outstanding progress in achieving the Millennium development goals specifically for succeeding in reducing child mortality rate by fifty percent. The award was received by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday at a function organized in New York. Bangladesh along with five other countries were honoured a day ahead of a high level conference to review the progress on the Millennium Development goals being organized on the sidelines of the 65th UN General Assembly. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the award is an encouraging gesture as her government has been sparing no efforts in achieving all the MDGs by 2015 despite the adverse impacts of the recent global crisis, global warming and climate change.According to a report released by the Bangladesh government last week, the country has made significant progress in eliminating gender disparity in primary and secondary school enrollment and is on track to achieve the targets of the millennium development goals like reduction in infant and child mortality rates, and reduction in deaths due to diseases like malaria and tuberculosis. The report also states that the country is on track to achieve a fifty percent reduction in the number of people living below the poverty line from 56.6 percent of 1990-91 to 29.0 percent by 2015.
