Highest ever voter turnout of 73 percent has been recorded in Haryana assembly polls on Wednesday.
Maharashtra registered 54.5 percent polling upto 5 pm and is expected to surpass last assembly election's record.
Briefing reporters in New Delhi, Deputy Election Commissioner Sudhir Tripathi said that polling may touch 62 percent mark in Maharashtra.
He said in the last Maharashtra assembly polls, the state had recorded 59.49 per cent.
Another Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha said, during the last assembly elections, Haryana had recorded 65 per cent voting.
The officials said that polling was by and large peaceful in the two states barring stray incidents of violence.
They said, in Maharashtra Left Wing Extremists fired bullets and blasted clamour mines in Gadhchiroli districts in which a CRPF jawan has been injured.
In Haryana 25 minor incidents of violence were reported.
Rs. 21 crore in cash, six lakh litre liquor have been recovered and 140 cases of paid news have been found of serious nature in both the states.
Election Commission has said that polling was by and large peaceful in Maharashtra and Haryana, barring stray incidents of violence.

Meanwhile, BJP has claimed that its agenda of good governance and development is behind higher voter turnout in the assembly polls in Haryana and Maharashtra. Briefing reporters in New Delhi today, party General Secretary J P Nadda said, voting was against the bad governance and corruption of Congress ruled governments in the two states. He exuded confidence that his party will get absolute majority in the states.
Replying to a question about the party's Chief Ministerial candidate, Mr. Nadda said party leadership has not yet taken any decision.
Congress attributed highest ever voter turn out in Haryana assembly elections to presence of multiple political parties in the fray.
Talking to AIR in New Delhi Wednesday evening, party spokesperson and general-secretary in-charge of the state Shakeel Ahmad said, the political parties have been able to motivate people to come out to vote.
Mr Ahmad acknowledged that extensive campaigning by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the state may help the BJP to improve its tally.
