Haryana Govt. to revisit cases against Rathore

Haryana government has decided to revisit the cases against former DGP S P S Rathore for his involvement in Ruchika molestation and other harassment cases of the family. The cases will be reopened following legal consultations. An announcement to this effect was made by the Haryana Chief Minsiter Mr. Bhopinder Singh Hooda while talking to reporters in New Delhi on Saturday. He also instructed senior police officials to provide full security to Ruchika's family.
CPIM leader Brinda Karat met the Chief Minister early in the morning and demanded stern action against Rathore.
The announcement comes close on the heels of Home Ministry slapping show cause notices to Rathore on asking why his police medal should not be taken away and pension reduced for allegedly abusing power.
The notices were served on Rathore, who has been sentenced by a court to six months of jail for molesting teenager Ruchika 19 years ago. Home Ministry sources said his conduct was allegedly unbecoming of a police officer. With the light sentence awarded to him creating an uproar, Rathore has been asked why his 1985 Police Medal for Meritorious Services should not be withdrawn and pension benefits reduced. Rathore, a 1965-batch IPS officer who retired in 2002, was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious service on August 15, 1985. However, he was never considered for President's Police Medal following an internal report of Intelligence Bureau. Ruchika (14), a budding tennis player, was molested in 1990 by Rathore, the then Inspector General of Police. She committed suicide three years later by consuming poison as the police official continued to harass her family.
