Haryana dominated the opening day of the 35th National Games in Thiruvananthapuram yesterday by bagging 6 Gold and a Silver medal. Most of their yellow metals came in Wrestling.However, Commonwealth Games gold-medallist and a World Championships silver-medallist, Amit Kumar had to settle for a silver after he was outwitted by Services Sports Control Board's Sandeep Tomar in the 57 kg category in one of the biggest upset of the day.Swimming was the most exciting sport on day one as many new records were made. Karnataka's Aaron D'Souza finished the 200 metres freestyle race in 1 minute 52.06 seconds to be the new champion. In the process, he bettered the Games record. In the Women's section, Haryana's Shivani Kataria clocked 2 minutes 7.46 seconds to grab the Gold and break the Games record. 100 metres Men's butterfly event also saw a new record.In other events, in the preliminary round matches of beach volleyball, Tamil Nadu defeated Maharashtra, 2-0, while Kerala Women beat Karnakata, 2-0. In Tennis, Gujarat entered the semi-finals of the Women's Team event defeating hosts Kerala. Goa beat Tamil Nadu 6-1 in the inaugural Men's football competition. After Haryana, hosts Kerala are second in the points table with 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze. Madhya Pradesh is third with 2 Gold and 3 bronze.
