Heavy snowfall across Germany disrupted air traffic resulting in cancellation of more than 540 flights at the largest airport in Frankfurt as snow clearing teams struggled to keep the runways and aircraft free of ice. Hundreds of stranded air travellers were forced to spend the entire night at hotels or at the airport where around 1,000 emergency beds were organised by the authorities. Train and bus traffic was also hit hard, as snow-blocked railway lines, frozen power lines and technical problems caused by the freezing temperatures resulted in long delays and cancellation of a number of long-distance trains. Fresh snow and freezing temperatures also caused traffic chaos and disruption in train and air services in Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Sweden.
