In West Bengal, the hard core Maoist leader, Suchitra Mehto and her husband surrendered before the State Chief Minister, Ms. Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata this afternoon. Later, talking to newsmen, the duo said that they decided to join in the mainstream of life in the wake of Chief Minister's initiative to expedite peace and development in Jungle Mahal. Ms. Banerjee also congratulated them for responding to the peace initiatives of the Government and also appealed other Maoists to follow the path. The Chief Minister said that the Government will give all assistance to Suchitra and her husband, including treatment facilities, according to the rehabilitation package announced by her Government to surrendering Maoists. AIR Kolkata Correspondent reports that Suchitra Mehto received major bullet injuries during the encounter with security forces, in which another top maoist leader Kishanji was shot dead few months ago in the Jungle Mahal.
