Hamid Karzai on four-day official visit to US

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai is on a four-day official visit to United States where he is scheduled to meet President Barack Obama and other senior officials. The Afghan President is accompanied by around a dozen ministers of his cabinet as both sides are expected to discuss a wide range of issues related to security, development and governance. This is the first visit of Mr. Karzai to US after he was elected for his second term last year in an election accused of fraud and which created rift between Afghan government and its western counterparts. Reconciliation with militant groups and the policy thereof is likely to dominate the discussions between the two Presidents. Afghan government has issued a draft reconciliation policy under which senior leaders of Taliban-led militant groups have been promised asylum in third world countries if they renounce violence and severe ties with groups like Al-Qaeda. For low level fighters, the proposals call for deradicalisation classes and manual jobs for them.
