The first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) will be signed today by Union Power Ministry, the Jharkhand government and state discom JBVNL. Four major states – Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and Maharashtra yesterday agreed to join UDAY. The scheme is for revival of debt stressed power distribution companies (discoms) in the country. <br/><br/>Union Minister Piyush Goyal said yesterday that within 2 months of announcement of UDAY scheme, more than half of the states are on board. The states which have evinced interest for the scheme include Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat. With a total of 15 states joining UDAY, 90 per cent of over Rs 4 lakh crore debt of discoms will be covered under the scheme.
