In Haiti, hundreds of thousands of people in makeshift camps are bracing for heavy rain as Tropical Storm 'Emily' swirls near the country. The US National Hurricane Centre is warning of flash floods and mudslides. The National Hurricane Centre said the tropical storm was 160 kilometres south-south-east of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. While maximum winds were put at 85 kilometres per hour, the main threat is from torrential downpours. Haitian officials issued a red alert and urged people to leave camps, many of which are sited on deforested hillsides. According to the International Office of Migration, some 634,000 Haitians still live in camps. Haiti is still struggling to recover from the devastating earthquake in January 2010.
