In Assam, Governor J B Patnaik has taken initiative to launch a white revolution. It will cover Tinsukia in the first phase as a few places of the district have already achieved success in milk production.Talking to AIR, Upper Assam Division Commissioner Ifitkar Hussain says that in a bid to improve the social and economic condition of the people of insurgency affected Sadia, Kakopathar and Tinsukia areas, the Governor have initiated the scheme. He further added that Bharat Integrated Social Welfare Agency (BISWA) has already submitted the detailed project report on it.It may be added that around 40 youths of Dirak- Kakopathar area at Sadia, started a dairy farm in 2008 with just two cows. They formed a cooperative society on a plot of 14 bighas of land. With the passage of times, the society received help from Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department. With the help of state government, the society procured 70 cross-breed cows. Now the society has a membership of around 70 youths.As the stage has set to start a white revolution, Tinsukia district administration has involved various government departments, SHGs, Dairy Development societies and local banks to implement the scheme. There are 200 dairy development societies and 15 SHGs are being involved in this process. More than a thousand people will be benefited from the dairy products.Assam government is likely to extend the scheme to Majuli, which is the largest river island of the world in the next phase. According to a report of 2007, the per capita availability of milk in Assam was 70 grams per day.
