Guru Nanak Jayanti or Guruparb is being celebrated across the country today. The day marks the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev. <br/><br/>This year marks 548th birthday of Guru Nanak. Thousands of devotees thronged gurdwaras across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh to offer prayers on the occasion. <br/><br/>A large number of devotees visited the Harmindar Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar. Here is more from our correspondent: <br/><br/>President Ram Nath Kovind has greeted the people on the occasion. In a message, he said, Guru Nanak stood against exploitation and atrocities and dedicated himself to the service and welfare of the underprivileged. <br/><br/>In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said people bow to Guru Nanak and recall his noble thoughts. <br/><br/>Congress President Sonia Gandhi said Guru Nanak taught people that life's learnings are about sacrifice, spirit of giving and sharing with an innate faith in the almighty.<br/><br/>Kartik Purnima is also being celebrated today. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day of the auspicious Karthika Month of the Hindu lunar calendar. <br/><br/>In Uttar Pradesh, lakhs of devotees took holy dip at Sangam, the confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati at Allahabad this morning.
