In Gujarat, a special court in Anand district has sentenced 18 persons to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of 5800 rupees on each convict in a post Godhra riot case. Five others convicted in the case have been given seven years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of 3800 rupees on each person. The court on Monday convicted 23 out of the 47 people accused in the case. 23 were acquitted and one accused had died during the trial period.
At least 23 people belonging to minority taking shelter in a house at Ode village in Anand district were killed on March 1, 2002 when a mob set it on fire during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat.
