Gujarat: PMNDP scheme offers peritoneal dialysis facility to patients at home

<span style="color: #222222;">The Government of India has introduced Haemodialysis under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme – PMNDP in 2016. The scope of the scheme has been extended to Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) to help patients get an affordable and accessible treatment remotely. With the inclusion of the home-based dialysis, the government seeks to bring down the overall cost of the treatment.<br />”<br />”AIR correspondent reports that there are about 20 lakh kidney patients in India. They require 34 million dialysis sessions every year. The outbreak of COVID19 pandemic has made things even more challenging.<br />”<br />”The people having co-morbidities like Chronic Kidney Disease and on dialysis are at an increased risk of contracting the deadly virus. The ongoing pandemic has given impetus to a more advanced and convenient technology for home-based dialysis treatment such as Peritoneal Dialysis.<br />”<br />”This is cost effective and improves the lifestyle of the patients. It is a painless and needle free process. Dr. Hardik Patel, Consultant Nephrologist at Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital of Nadiad said that the knowledge and awareness will help in popularising this technique.</span><br />
