Gujarat High Court asks Nanavati Commission to clarify by April 1 whether it would summon Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The Nanavati Commission, which is probing the post-Godhra riots cases, is expected to submit its report by June 30.
The Commission has not called Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for questioning so far. The direction comes a day after Mr Modi failed to appear before the Special Investigation Team -SIT in Ahmedabad.
He was summoned by the SIT in connection with a Gulbarg massacre case in post-Godhra riots in 2002. Special Investigation Team- headed by former CBI Director R. K.
Raghavan had issued summons to Modi early this month in connection with the complaint filed by Mrs.Zakia Jafary- the widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafary who was killed in the Gulberg Housing society with 68 others.
The Congress has criticised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for not showing up before the SIT. Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said in New Delhi that it was contemptuous and showed that Modi loves to hide.
The BJP remains non-committal on whether Chief Minister Narendra Modi would depose before the Special Investigation Team. BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that the government of Gujarat has made it clear that it shall act as per the law.
