Gujarat HC asks Nanavati Commission to clarify stand on summoning Modi
The Gujarat High Court has asked the Nanavati Commission, probing the 2002 riot cases, to clarify by April 1 whether it will summon Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the matter. A division bench of Chief Justice S J Mukhopadhaya and Justice Akil Kureshi sought this information from the government pleader while hearing an appeal by Jan Sangarsh Manch, an NGO representing the riot victims of 2002. Nanavati Commission, in September last year had disposed of the application of Sangarsh Manch asking for summoning of Mr Modi and others saying that it did not find justification in cross-examining them.

The High Court direction comes a day after Mr Modi failed to appear before the Special Investigation Team – SIT in Ahmedabad. He was summoned by the SIT in connection with a Gulbarg massacre case in post-Godhra riots in 2002. Special Investigation Team- headed by former CBI Director R. K. Raghavan had issued summons to Mr.Modi early this month in connection with the complaint filed by Mrs.Zakia Jafary- the widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafary who was killed in the Gulberg Housing society with 68 others.

Mr. Narendra Modi has said that Special Investigation Team, SIT has never summoned him on 21st March as reported in the media. In a open letter to the public, Mr. Modi said that he will fully cooperate with the SIT appointed by the Supreme Court and respect the Constitution. He alleged that there are some elements who constantly defaming Gujarat have indulged in false propaganda that Mr.Modi has not obeyed the summons of SIT. In a written statement faxed to All India Radio, Mr. Modi said that SIT has not fixed the date of 21st March for him to appear before it. Mr. Modi said that it is matter of investigation that who is spreading false propaganda against him and what is the intention behind it.
