Gujarat Governor returns "Voting Mandatory Bill"

Gujarat Governor Dr. Kamala has returned a bill seeking to make voting mandatory in the state on the ground that the legislation violates the constitution. While returned the bill to the State Government she also objects to punishment clause for those choosing not to vote. State Assembly passed the bill in December 2009. Speaker of the State Assembly Mr. Ashok Bhatt said that Governor has returned the bill a few days back. Our Ahmedabad Correspondent reports that the main objection cited by the Governor is that the bill violates constitutional provision that does not allow voting to be made mandatory and that no punishment can be meted out for not participating in the exercise of voting.
