Gujarat Governor has appointed former Justice of Gujarat High Court Justice R.A. Mehta as Lokayukta in the State. Quoting Raj Bhavan sources in Gandhinagar, our Ahmedabad Correspondent reports that under the Lokayukt Act of Gujarat, 1986, the Governor has the power to appoint Lokayukt in the State on the recommendation of Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court. Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court has already recommended the name of former Judge Justice R.A. Mehta as Lokayukt but the State Government was not appointing Lokayukt in the State since last seven years. Leader of the Opposition, and Congress Legislative Party, Mr.Shakti Singh Gohil alleged that Chief Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi was not appointing the Lokayukt in the State despite several reminders from the Governor. The Governor invoking powers under the Act has appointed Justice R.A. Mehta as Lokayukt in the State for a five-year term.
