The Gujarat Assembly has passed an amendment to the Prohibition Act stipulating capital punishment for manufacture and sale of spurious liquor in the state, amid opposition by the Congress on Friday.

The Assembly passed the Amendment Bill by a majority vote without making any changes after it was sent back by the Governor for reconsideration over the death sentence clause.

The Bill was passed in the last Assembly session following a hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad, which had claimed over 130 lives in July this year. The Bill provides for capital punishment for manufacture, supply, transport and sale of spurious liquor if its consumption results in death.

While returning the bill for reconsideration, the Governor had asked the state government to have wider discussion on some of the provisions of the amendment bill with representatives of the civil society groups, Gandhian, Opposition leaders and law experts.
