Guj HC cancels recruitment of 3,000 police constables

Gujarat High Court has cancelled the recruitment of 3,000 armed and un-armed police constables made in 2006, holding that it was in contravention of the reservation policy for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates and asked the State Government to make appointments afresh in two and a half months. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala has also made it clear that, till the completion of the entire exercise of re-fixing or preparing a new select list of the candidates, who are already in service, may not be disturbed till the finalisation of the entire select list. About 50 petitions were filed in 2006 by unsuccessful SC and ST candidates.Petitioners claimed that the whole selection procedure undertaken by the Board was illegal and violation of fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
