Nigeria will proceed with national gubernatorial elections today, despite continuing violence that has raised fears that an Islamist group will step up attacks against voters. Bomb blasts yesterday, in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, killed three people and wounded dozens. The Police commissioner for Borno state Michael Zukoma said in one of three blasts, a bomb thrown from a motorcycle detonated, resulting in the three fatalities. Nigerian police told CNN that Boko Haram, an Islamist sect that has challenged Nigeria's government, is responsible for the attacks. They described it as an attempt to intimidate voters who re-elected President Goodluck Jonathan this month.
