Authorities in Guatemala say they have given up hope for 40 people buried in a mudslide on the main highway north of the Guatemala city. Twenty bodies have been recovered so far. They died when a hillside collapsed on a crowd of volunteers as they tried to dig out a bus buried by a previous mudslide. The Civil Defence Director said fear of further landslide because of heavy rain has forced rescuers to abandon the search. The Guatemalan President has called it a national tragedy.
