GST to take total output of Indian economy to $2-trillion: Pranab

The Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday said that the successful implementation of Goods and Services Tax, GST will take the total output of Indian economy to two trillion US dollars in a short span of time. Addressing a meeting of captains of Industry in New Delhi, Mr. Mukherjee asserted that it will provide a level playing field to the domestic producers, besides stimulating the economy by removing tax distortions and tax competitions. The Finance Minister yesterday proposed a three tier structure for a new Indirect Tax Regime. He said that the successful implementation of the GST will also create a win-win situation for Centre, state, industry and consumers. Mr. Mukherjee said that the Centre has already discussed the draft constitutional amendment bill with the state finance ministers for implementing this tax code and are looking forward to constructive suggestions from the Empowered Committee on the landmark legislation. Referring to the Empowered Group under the Unique Identification Authority Chairman, Nandan Nilekani, for putting in place the IT infrastructure for GST, he said, this has helped the government in freezing one of the critical elements for the successful roll out of GST.
