GST logjam: Govt resumes efforts to get Oppn on board; Naidu meets Sonia Gandhi

The government today resumed its efforts to get the opposition on board to pass the two important legislations pending in Parliament. Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to seek their cooperation in the passage of Goods and Services Tax Bill and Real Estate Bill. <br/><br/>The two bills could not be passed during the Monsoon Session of Parliament due to disruption of Parliament proceedings and Congress opposition to some issues related to the legislative proposals. <br/><br/>During the meeting with Sonia Gandhi, Mr Naidu told her that government is ready to advance the Budget Session if her party comes on board and other parties agree to it. Mr Naidu also conveyed government's views on issues raised by the main opposition on the GST.<br/><br/>Mr Naidu said that Mrs Gandhi assured him to get back after holding internal discussion with her party leaders on the issues. The goods and Services Tax bill is stuck in the Rajya Sabha where NDA lacks numbers. <br/><br/>The bill has already been cleared by the Lok Sabha. The Congress wants scrapping of one per cent inter state tax and capping of GST rate at 18 per cent in the Constitutional Bill itself. It also wants more say for the states in GST council for resolution of grievances.The government has already addressed most of the concerns raised by the Congress. On the Real Estate bill, the government has already accepted recommendations of the Select Committee.
