India's quest to achieve self reliance in cryogenic launch technology suffered a set back as GSLV-D3 failed in its mission today. GSLV-D3 blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota at 4.27 this evening but the vehicle tumbled five minutes after lift off. Addressing scientists gathered at the mission control centre, ISRO Chairman, Dr K Radhakrishnan said tumbling of the vehicle indicated that the control was lost as the two vernier engines may not have ignited. He said detailed analysis of the data would be carried out and the reasons for the non-ignition of the engines will be found out. He said, scientists will also try to ascertain if the cryogenic engine ignited at all. Mr. Radhakrishnan assured that the next flight of the GSLV with indigenous cryogenic engine would take place within a year.
